Play Isn’t a Luxury: Reclaiming Joyful Literacy Learning in the ‘Science of Reading’ Era

As schools increasingly embrace the “science of reading,” many educators are asking whether evidence-based reading instruction can coexist with play-based learning. This article argues that the answer is yes—and that it must. While systematic phonics and decoding instruction are essential, reducing literacy to scripted lessons and isolated skills risks overlooking the rich language, creativity, and meaning-making that emerge through children’s play. Using research and classroom examples, the author demonstrates how dramatic play, storytelling, diverse literature, multilingual experiences, and child-led exploration strengthen vocabulary, comprehension, oral language, and identity as readers and writers. The article offers practical strategies for integrating play with structured literacy instruction, urging teachers, school leaders, and policymakers to protect play as a vital context for learning. Rather than competing with the science of reading, play enriches it, helping children develop not only the skills to read, but also the curiosity, confidence, and joy that inspire a lifelong love of literacy.
